The Centre for Social Impact Swinburne conducted recent research into Australia’s social venture ecosystem and invite you to attend the official launch of the attached report.

 

The research, commissioned by the Paul Ramsay Foundation in late 2020, aimed to better understand a previously under-researched aspect of this social venture ecosystem - support programs, intermediaries and representative networks.  Please join us for the report launch and webinar, during which we will discuss the research, our findings and their implications for growing Australia’s social venture ecosystem.

QSEC would like to congratulate the Social Enterprise Network of Victoria (SENVIC) on their contribution to the Victorian Government's new four year social enterprise strategy (2021- 2025). 

• The strategy has identified four key pillars:
• Building business skills and capability, and capturing impact
• Enhancing recognition and access to innovative financing to scale impact
• Fostering a connected and innovative social enterprise ecosystem across Victoria

Reducing organic waste The Queensland Government has developed the draft Queensland Organics Strategy 2022–2032 (Strategy) to propose how we can reduce the amount of organic waste that goes to landfill and look at other ways to avoid, reuse and recycle. Organic waste includes garden, food, food processing, bio-solids and agricultural wastes. It makes up around half of what Queenslanders throw away each week in their wheelie bin and is one of the main types of waste sent to landfill. Although organic waste is often seen as ‘natural’, when it breaks down it releases methane, a greenhouse gas that is at least 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Some of the organic waste produced by Queensland homes and businesses is already being converted into new products including soil, potting mix and mulch.  Have your say Government, industry, businesses and community members all have a role to play in managing organic waste.  Take this short survey or email your feedback to ResourceRecovery@des.qld.gov.au. Congratulations to the successful social enterprises who applied for the Community Social Enterprise Development Grants! 

The Community Social Enterprise Development Grants program provided grants to experienced non-profit community-based organisations to increase the capability and capacity of the social enterprises they operate.

The program assisted organisations to grow existing social enterprises and expand skills development and employment opportunities for disadvantaged Queenslanders, including:

• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
• migrants and refugees from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
• people with disability
• young people (aged 15–24 years), including those in and transitioned from out-of-home care
• women re-entering the workforce
• veterans, ex-Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel and their families
• recently released prisoners.

Applications for the Social Enterprise Growth Grants are now open. 

The Social Enterprise Growth Grants program will provide grants to eligible established Queensland social enterprises for capability and capacity building that supports the business to scale up or adapt.

The social enterprise must have potential within the next 2 years to grow the business including its social impact and increase employees.

Available funding

In 2021–22, $800,000 will be made available for the Social Enterprise Growth Grants.

Your social enterprise may be eligible for financial assistance of between $5,000 and $25,000 (excluding GST).

Eligibility criteria

Your business must be a Queensland social enterprise that can demonstrate it meets the program definition of a social enterprise (including the commercial trading and reinvesting benchmarks outlined in the funding guidelines), and has operated and traded in Queensland for at least 12 months.

Your social enterprise must have a mission or purpose aligned to Queensland Government priorities including, but not limited to:

• supporting jobs
• investing in skills
• growing regions
• protecting the environment
• safeguarding health.

Eligible activities

Grants will provide funding for activities, services or expenditure that build the skills, capability and capacity of the social enterprise. Funding requested must have a direct link to increasing business sustainability and/or employment.

Funding is available for the purchase of:

• production equipment
• digital equipment and systems
• consumables, resources or materials (specific to an identified growth opportunity)
• skills development and coaching programs
• business and strategic planning advice
• website development and upgrades
• marketing strategies.
