    The Queensland Small Business Commissioner's role

    The Office of the Queensland Small Business Commissioner (QSBC) was initially established under the COVID-19 Emergency Response Act 2020. It is now in the process of transitioning into a permanent service.

    The Office of the Queensland Small Business Commissioner (OQSBC) provides information and advocacy support to small businesses, and informal resolution and mediation of coronavirus (COVID-19) affected small business leases.

    This free booklet is for entrepreneurs from Multicultural Backgrounds and those assisting them. It was written in conjunction with Nundah Co-ooperative, the Yunus Social Business Centre of Griffith University, and migrant entrepreneurs like the Mountain Mowing Men and with support from Brisbane City Council.

    ATT: Social enterprises interested in raising cash and telling your impact story!

    The Funding Network Australia are accepting applications to pitch at TFN Virtual Live on Thursday 18 November. The live crowdfunding event will spotlight the impact of finalist social enterprises supporting Australians in need.

    Three finalists will receive professional coaching and the opportunity to pitch at a virtual live crowdfunding event to raise an estimated $20,000 each.

    Calling grassroots social enterprises delivering innovative social change programs! Are you ready to share your story and raise vital funds?

    We are now accepting applications to pitch at TFN Virtual Live on Thursday 18 November, a special virtual live crowdfunding event that will spotlight the life-changing work of grassroots social enterprises that are supporting Australians in need. A big thank you to our event supporter the English Family Foundation for generously providing matched funding to ensure every donation received will go even further!

    Three finalists will receive professional coaching and the chance to connect with an audience of 100+ guests at an exciting virtual live crowdfunding event to raise an estimated $20,000 each.

    The federal government has expanded its SME Recovery Loan Scheme, removing requirements for businesses to have received JobKeeper this year or to have been affected by flooding.

    The relaxation of eligibility requirements is in response to the ongoing effects of COVID‑19, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said in a statement.

    Under the new guidelines, the loan scheme will continue to provide access to loans of up to $5 million over a 10-year period to SMEs with a turnover of less than $250 million that are experiencing financial hardship due to the effects of the coronavirus. T

    he federal government will guarantee 80% of the loan amount, which participating lenders can offer as unsecured or secured loans.

    Sefa is the only participating approved lender in the federal SME Schemes with a social purpose.

    The loan scheme also allows lenders to offer borrowers a repayment holiday of up to two years.

    Businesses can use the loans to cover a range of business expenses, such as to support investment and refinance pre-existing debt, including debt from the SME Guarantee Scheme.

    The tutorial allows you to view the QUT Community Collection for grant-seekers, fundraisers and philanthropists and shows you how to use the world’s leading grant-seeking database, theFoundation Directory Online. QUT is the only institution in the Southern Hemisphere which hosts this unique collection. We thank the experts at Strategic Grants for being the volunteer tutorial facilitators.

    The tutorials are held at QUT’s Garden Point Campus, Brisbane. There are four scheduled in 2021. You are welcome to choose a single date that suits you. Note: All sessions are filling quickly!

    There was excitement all around as HomeBase announced the 16 successful projects and founders taking part in the 20-week Elevate+ accelerator program. Going online due to COVID restrictions didn’t dampen the spirits of the teams, mentors and community supporters who joined.  

    The enterprises taking part this year are an inspiring mix of Logan and SEQld entrepreneurs – from Beekeeping education to organic fertiliser, to an Indigenous-led platform for youth to display their creativity – and lots in between!

    Regional social enterprises are urged to get ready to apply for the second round of Business Basics grants.

    Eligible small businesses in Far North Queensland are able to apply for a $5,000 grant to increase core skills and adopt best practice. 

    Guidelines for the program are now available for your small business to review the details, check eligibility and gather supporting documentation.

    To be eligible for this grant, your business must:

    • not have been approved for funding under Round 1 of the Business Basics Grants program
    • have fewer than 20 employees (by head count) at the time of applying for the grant
    • have an active Australian Business Number (ABN) and be registered for GST
    • have a Queensland headquarters, and be based in regional Queensland (use the eligibility tool to check your location)
    • have a turnover of $300,000 or less for the last financial year (2020–21)
    • have owners or directors that are not insolvent or an undischarged bankrupt.

    Sick of seeing waste in your community? Got good ideas for getting resources out of landfill, and into new products? Love to see trash become treasure?

    Rockhampton Regional Council and CQUniversity want to hear from you!

    RRC and CQU are progressing a partnership to develop an Upcycle Village at the Lakes Creek Road Waste Management Facility.

    On Wednesday 8 September, you can join a big-thinking workshop to capture ideas for recycling and upcycling businesses that reduce waste in the Rockhampton Region, then work with expert facilitators to shape a viable business model.

    Participants who want to progress their idea can access post-workshop support to complete an EOI to develop an Upcycle Village business.

    This free and interactive session is 10am to 2pm at Rockhampton Smart Hub.

    Whether you’re a home composter wanting to scale up, a worker with ideas for waste reduction in your industry, or just passionate about sustainability, come and connect with other passionate locals, and help Rockhampton Region move towards a zero waste and circular economy.
